Jewelry making is an ancient past time, yet is still very popular today. There are many reasons that people begin jewelry making, whether for a hobby or a business or just because they love jewelry. No matter what your reason, you are probably always looking for new and exciting ideas.
Jewelry makers often start out simply with beaded bracelets and necklaces. This is a great way to start out until you are ready for something more challenging. At this point, you may be more interested in making more complex jewelry. If so, here are some tips to get you moving onto a more creative level.
Your own handcrafted jewelry can be simple or intricate. It's entirely up to you and what you enjoy making. More complicated, intricate jewelry that incorporates more beads and material may be more challenging. However, even some simple jewelry requires patience and skill.
Handcrafted earrings and pendants are a good place to start if you are interested in more advanced jewelry. These items require that you have more advanced tools as well. You probably have a good selection of beads, string, and chains. You'll want to get more of these in a wider variety of colors, sizes and shapes.
Also, you will need several good pairs of pliers. This may be the most important tool for you to have to take you to the next level. Pliers will allow you to shape, cut and manipulate the wire and other material that you will need to create earrings and pendant pieces. Different pliers are necessary for different tasks.
Start out with a good pair of cutting pliers and fine nose pliers. Then as you advance you'll need to add flat and round nose pliers, crimping pliers, etc. These tools will help you to create beautiful, quality jewelry.
The wire is important as well. Make sure you have a good variety of wire that will fit your selection of beads. Working with wire and beads takes a little more time and patience than bead and string, but your results will be worth it.
If by now you don't have a supportive chair to work in with good lighting, make that a priority. You don't want to have to limit your jewelry making time because of strain to your back or your eyes. Also, a work area that can be used for just your jewelry keeps things tidy and separate. There's nothing like losing your materials in a stack of bills.
