Getting to the Top of Google For Beginners Part 1
by Samuel Morris
Getting ranked on the first page, let alone in the number one spot, of search engines for your chosen search term is no easy task. For a small business or independent publisher getting in one of the top three spots on Google for the term that their users are looking for can be the difference between success and having to go find another job. As a veteran SEO (search engine optimization) specialist I can tell you that you are about to embark upon very distinguished road. It is a long, narrow, bumpy, and twisted one but a road that you must travel if you want to achieve any level of success with your business online. You could always hire an SEO specialist but for most of us this is not an option, and even if you do decide to hire a specialist it is critical to know what you're paying for to get the most out of your money.
In this series I will go over the basic concepts that any beginner can easily grasp to begin ranking highly in Google for their desired search terms. This series is by no means a full on guide to SEO but it should give you the general concepts that you need in order to understand why and how pages rank the way they do. Read on to begin your journey into the world of search engine optimization.
First off, lets understand who you're trying to convenience your webpage is important: Google. Google, as well as other search engines, ranks pages based on an automated algorithm. This algorithm is very good but it is not perfect, which is why you sometimes have to go to page 2, 3, or further to find what you thought should have came up on page one. Have you ever published a webpage on a VERY specific subject only to find that it is on page 50+ even though your information is by far the most relevant? You may have even put up a biography page with your very unique full name only to be out ranked by your friend's Facebook page that briefly mentions you. Don't worry, there is no magical little search engine elf deciding to kick your website to the curb, it's all automated and even though you may have the most relevant content you must learn to write your pages so that you tell the search engines why it is relevant in a language that it's algorithm can understand: chiefly, page "tags" and incoming links.
Search engine optimization breaks down into two categories, on-page optimization and off-page optimization. On-page, sometimes referred to as on-site, optimization is composed of the webpage's actually content and the HTML code tags that format this content. Off-page optimization is pretty much all about links to your webpage from other sites. While there are many different factors that give different links different values, it's all about getting other webpages to link to your webpage.
In the next article in this series we will discuss on-page search engine optimization and how it affects your ability to get the top spot in Google.
