Tips For Playing a Human in Shadowrun

by Aaron Finch

Humans can be seen as the "jack of all trades" class, which gives you options when choosing your build. However, the one thing you should keep in mind is that the human is the class that should be dishing out the damage and getting kills for your team. The tips that I will share with you will give you some different ways to play a human effectively.

The first tip is somewhat obvious but most people skip right over it. Buy Resurrect. Plain and simple. Shadowrun is a team based game and the fact that you can revive your mates is critical to success. Even if resurrect will cost you some essence you will still have enough to have a teleport and the ability to cast crucial magics such as gust and Tree of Life.

The next tip has to do with the way the human class itself works. Since you are able to use techs virtually free (with the exception of using up the casting slot) you should use them. Two of your three casting slots should contain a tech with the third being teleport. The two techs should reflect your play style, and each of them has their uses. Personally I lean towards Wired Reflexes as one of my two techs for the reload speed, the quick burst of speed, and the passive ability to move around the map. The third slot is again based on your style of play but I weigh the map, opponents style, and other factors when considering what to buy to fill the last slot. On a big map I would lean towards another movement helper such as Glider. On a small map with loads of walls Enhanced Vision will work wonders. Or if neither of these appeal to you Smartlink is always helpful.

My next tip when playing a human is to buy all of the magics and techs you may need over the course of the match. Tree and Resurrect are pretty standard. After you finish off your build I would consider picking up Gust to save yourself from grenades and to finish off smokers. Anti-magic Generators are also useful to kill Trolls quickly or to finish off those pesky bleeders. Utilize your ability to do many things as a human and make your opponents pay no matter which build they choose. A way to ensure that you have the money to buy everything you need is to not buy weapons at the start of a round, instead pick them up off of your enemies. Humans have a large health advantage over Elves, exploit this to gather weapons for the tougher enemies.

The biggest thing I can say about playing a human is to look at what your team is missing and fill that role. If your team is full of Elves then play the role of the frontal assault guy while still using hit and run tactics. If your team has more Trolls than anything stay back and pick people off with a rifle. Know how your team likes to work and then complement them. Usually what happens is the side with the best teamwork will win even if they don't quite have the same skill as the other team.
